As the Naval Officer wore his dress sword so did the Petty Officer proudly display his dirk. This example from the 1790’s has a fine bone grip wrapped with twisted brass wire. The solid pommel and guard are also brass. The keen high carbon blade fits snugly into a solid brass scabbard.
